Assistant Professor of Medieval Studies

The Department of Medieval Studies at Central European University Private University (CEU PU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Medieval Studies. The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher and researcher in the field of Medieval Studies and Cultural Heritage Studies, with the ability to teach subjects and supervise theses at the BA, MA and PhD levels in a broad chronological range from ca. 800 to 1500.

The Department of Medieval Studies has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. It provides comparative and multi-disciplinary postgraduate education on all aspects of the history and culture of the period from c.300 to c.1600.

The Department currently offers four degree programs:
- MA in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies (one year)
- MA in Comparative History: Interdisciplinary Late Antique, Medieval and Renaissance Studies (two years)
- PhD in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies (three to six years).
- MA in Cultural Heritage Studies: Academic Research, Policy, Management (two years)

In addition, the Department participates in the recently established BA programs of CEU.

Duties and responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and further developing the profile of Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies and Cultural Heritage Studies at the Department of Medieval Studies. They will work in close collaboration with other members of the Department teaching subjects on the social, cultural, political, economic or religious history of European Middle Ages. Possible research foci of the applicants may include (but not be restricted to) cultural history and the interaction between Western and Central Europe; philology; textual and literary heritage. The expert knowledge of at least two relevant source languages is also required. They are expected to teach courses in all four programs offered by the Department, in the BA program of CEU, and be an active member of the Medieval Central Europe Research Network (MECERN).

Qualifications:
- The successful candidate must have a PhD in a field relevant for Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies and must have demonstrated outstanding research in the field.
- Teaching experience in thematic courses and on research methodology, as well as on cultural heritage related subjects, particularly at graduate level, is considered an asset.

Compensation
We offer a competitive yearly salary of EUR 60,000, commensurate with experience as well as additional benefits (e.g. pension plan). The initial contract is for 6 years. Contracts are renewable and can be turned into indefinite contracts depending on outcome of review.
